Alyansa Tigil Mina extends its sympathies to the people of Masara village in the province of Davao de Oro, particularly the families of those who were killed, and the miners who went missing after their buses were buried by a landslide.

This unfortunate tragedy underscores the dangers brought about by mining, especially during floods and heavy rains.

ATM has repeatedly cautioned about the interconnection between mining and climate change. We have warned that mining not only contributes to climate change but also exacerbates the impacts of climate change.

We call on the government to undertake measures to prevent similar disasters as they respond to the needs of the families affected by the landslide.

On a larger scale, we reiterate our demand to stop destructive mining operations in the communities. The steep costs of mining to the environment and people’s lives are not worth any of its purported benefits.
